Koheras fiber lasers by NKT Photonics's address novel wind LIDAR applications Researchers at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in the US have developed a novel LIDAR system for conducting wind speed measurements onboard a jet aircraft at high altitude, using a Koheras CW fiber laser system from NKT Photonics.
NKT Photonics expands their hollow core fiber offering through a collaboration with the University of Bath Birkeroed, November 2010 – NKT Photonics A/S and University of Bath announce that they have reached an agreement enabling NKT Photonics A/S to expand its range of hollow core fibers. NKT Photonics will offer selected fibers produced by the University of Bath to the general marketplace, along with its existing hollow core and other microstructured fibers from its Crystal Fibre range.
“The hollow core fibers in the Crystal Fibre product line have always had a strong contribution from the University of Bath, dating back to when Crystal Fibre A/S acquired Blaze Photonics, and with it many of the fibers pioneered by Blaze Photonics and the University of Bath”, said Jakob Skov, CEO.
As a result of this agreement, NKT Photonics will offer a set of new hollow core fibers produced by the University of Bath, with a particular focus on fibers used in the visible wavelength range.
“We are pleased that we can continue to serve our customers with these leading edge fibers, and along with the help and expertise of the University of Bath, demonstrate our continued leadership and commitment in the area of hollow core fibers ”, said Skov.

NKT Photonics enters into EU FP7 program IMPROV NKT Photonics enters into the EU FP7 program IMPROV, which targets tunable mid-infrared pulsed laser systems. Within the program NKT Photonics will develop Thulium doped fibers for high power laser systems at 2 µm.
NKT Photonics in EOS brochure "How optics and photonics address Europe's challenges of the 21st century" NKT Photonics development program on infrared supercontinuum sources has been selected for publication in the latest brochure from the European Optical Society. The program targets developing a supercontinuum source from 2 to 5 µm.
NKT Photonics succeeds in patent case against Fianium BIRKEROED, Denmark, 6th of May, 2010 – NKT Photonics - with its brand Crystal Fibre - is pleased to have successfully ended its legal dispute with Fianium in the UK (English Patent Infringement Claim No.: HC 09 C 00159).
On 29th of April 2010, Fianium was ordered by the English Patents Court not to infringe the Crystal Fibre patents EP 1 340 725 and EP 1 153 324 in any way howsoever. These patents relate to pressure control for producing photonic crystal fibers, also known as microstructured fibers, and to post-processing of such fibers, respectively. Further, Fianium was ordered to pay for past infringements of the patents, and also to pay the legal costs of both parties from February 2009 (the date it was sued) until one year later, February 2010, when an acceptable settlement offer from Fianium was finally made.
“We are very pleased with the outcome and we remain fully committed to protecting our intellectual property portfolio.” says Jakob Skov CEO of NKT Photonics A/S. “In our view, photonic crystal fibers represent a key platform for photonics applications, such as supercontinnum systems and high power lasers. In recent years we have seen a rapid growth in the PCF based fiber & component sale demonstrating commercial success for our OEM customers.”
Nasa develops lidar using Koheras Basik seed laser from NKT Photonics Engineers at NASA's Langley Research Center has developed a high spectral resolution lidar for atmospheric studies using a Koheras Basik module as the seed laser.
